Tool Box
Gone are the days of carbureted vehicles with vacuum controls, your parents sedan for example was network of basic automotive electronic circuits powering systems such as their radio or their heater. With advancements in computer controlled electronics ushering in a new area of automotive electronic integration and computer controlled systems.
When you look at a new car on the dealer's lot you are looking at a computer or even multiple computers working together, responsible with the tasks of monitoring and controlling your cars automotive electronics systems.
For instance your power door locks on the outside seems to be as simple as a light switch, but behind that switch may be a set of resistors sending signals through an integrated network of sensitive electronic circuit. This network may also be integrated with the vehicles power windows, automotive air bags and even the anti theft car alarm.
Even your radio on the outside still plays the songs on your favorite compact disc. But behind that could be the main hub of the vehicles' interior automotive electronic systems. Such as Power Locks, Power Windows, Air Bags, Navigation, Trip Computer and Heads Up display.
Automotive electronics have advanced so far that almost every circuit is integrated into an electronic network of signals and switches. This has helped automotive design to combine electronic systems and improve the driver's experience.

1.Computer Safe Logic Probe I prefer to use this one, the Mac Tools part# ET120A. It’s a very simple unit and it gets the job done. You would use this like you would a test light except. This one will test for either a 12+ source or a ground source. There is Red/Green LED in the body to show your results Red for positive power and Green for a Body Ground. Cost: $50 CDN |
2.Needle Nose Pliers Not much description needed for this, they are pliers. You use them to grab things your stumpy little installer fingers cant reach.
Cost: $10 CDN each |
3.1/4 inch drive Socket Set For the amount you will use these for you DO NOT NEED a professional set of sockets. Get a socket set that has both deep and shallow sockets. You will be working on many different makes of carsbe it import or domestic so make sure you have both SAE & MM. You will need a wide range of sizes so make sure you have sockets up to 1/2 inch and or 15mm. Try to get chrome ones because if they are black or any other color its near impossible to find them in a dimly lit car. Cost: $40 CDN |
5.Adjustable Wrench/Spanner The same goes for wrenchs, you DO NOT NEED a professional set of wrenchs. If you purchase 2 adjustable wrenchs you will be able to tighten or loosen just about any bolt or fastener that is in your way. A couple things to consider though, make sure they are high visibility and make sure they fairly small. Cost: $8 CDN each |
6.Screw Drivers A basic set of screw drivers will go along way here. You will mainly be using various sizes of Philips, Flat Tip/Strait Edge and Torx. Also a stuby Phillips No.2 may bne required.
Cost: $25 CDN |
7. Wire Strippers These will pull the insulation back on a wire with out actually breaking the wire. Makes it very easy once you have found your wires to simpley peel back the insulation attach your wire solder it and then replace the original insulation with electrical tape. There are different styles of wire strippers, but if you are a beginner these would be the best. Also inbetween the handles is an area for crimping connects for like ring terminals or but connectors. Cost: $20 CDN |
8. Trouble Light Its mighty dark under the dash so you are gonna need one of these, the flourescentones are usually the best. LED ones give off a light that will change the color of the wires so they are badand the incandescent ones get too hot and melt carpet if left on the ground. Cost: $25 CDN |
9. Step Drill Bit These can replace an entire drill bit index and its justone drill bit. On some cars you have to drill through a cars firewall just to get your wires under the hood. Cost: $17 CDN |
10. Multi Meter On some vehicles you will have to measure voltages, current drawand resistence on circuits. This is the tool for the job. You will mainly be using your logic probe but you dont wannaq leave this one at home. You can also use them to test for tach wires. Cost: $25 CDN |
11. Cordless Drill For drilling ! Make sure you get a quality unit.A cheap drill is going toquit on you when you need it the most so pay now instead of later. Can be used with almost everything:
Cost: $150-300 CDN |
12. Soldering Iron Twist and tape will only get you so far. To create a solid connection you should be soldering all your wire connections. How you make those soldier joints is up to you but a common method is to use a Soldering Iron. Cost: $20-30 CDN |
